Great Taste. Less Waste.

Trouble is brewing in the coffee world here is what you need to know about the price rise...

THERE ARE A NUMBER OF FACTORS AT PLAY ...

Coffee shortages & bad weather

Owner Matt Swiatkiwsky said one of the worst frosts in half a century hit Brazil in the middle of last year and created a worldwide shortage - ABC Reports.

Brazil is Australia's largest coffee bean importer, producing 50% less coffee in 2021 and 2022. These shortages are expected to impact the crop for the next three years, so brace yourself for the long hall, this crisis isn't going anywhere.

Fuel prices and freight issues

You'll likely already know about the shipping container shortages causing havoc globally, with the situation only being made worse due to the increase in fuel prices off the back of the devastation in the Ukraine.

"Freight would be the big one for us with the cost of fuel going up," Swiatkiwsky added.

Unemployment and increased wages

A less obvious reason your barista-made coffee could be boiling to new all-time highs is the staff shortages forcing café owners to increase wages. This rides off the back of covid lockdowns, which saw startling numbers of hospitality employees moving out of the industry.

Inflation

It's not just these global shortages causing prices to rise, with inflation gearing up to grow above 3.5% this quarter, it is everything else that goes into the cup.

SO HOW HARD IS THIS GOING TO STING?

coffee price increase

While some reports indicate an increase of 30 to 50 cents, others say Australians could expect to see increases up to $1.

Ouch, that burns!

It's safe to say this is larger than just one issue and unfortunately, it looks like the issue is going to stick around, but do we think this is going to effect Aussies love for their morning brew?

Despite a certain sting, it is certainly a part of Australian culture and we cannot imagine coffee is going anywhere.

EcoCaffe is yet to introduce price updates, so if you're running low, it might be time to stock up...

Why Descale?

If you love your coffee, you will probably be making plenty of usage from your coffee machine to get your daily fix. But have you ever thought about how dirty your machine can get?

It is important to keep your coffee maker clean and also prevent the growth of bacteria, yeast or even mould.

By descaling your Nespresso machine regularly, you will make sure to remove not just hard water deposits, but also all those other nasties.

Also, the cleaner your machine is, the better your coffee is going to taste. We recommend coffee machine descaling at least twice a year

Descaling can be done in six easy steps and should take about 20 minutes.

Follow these steps:

Prepare your machine

  • Turn on your machine
  • Eject any capsule, empty the capsule container and the drip tray
  • Put in 1 litre of warm fresh water (4 cups) in the water container.
  • Mix in a sachet of descaling solution.
  • Place a container that can hold up to one litre of water under the coffee outlet.

Descale Mode

  • Pixie, Essenza, Citiz and Inissia – simultaneously press on two buttons for three seconds until the lights will start to flash quickly; this indicates the machine is in descale mode
  • U – simultaneously press all three buttons for three seconds until the lights will start to flash quickly; this indicates the machine is in descale mode
  • Lattisima – put in the descaling nozzle, press the cappuccino button.

Descaling your machine

  • Press the Lungo button and wait until the flow has finished
  • Fill the water tank with the used solution
  • Press the Lungo button and let all the descaling solution flow through the machine again

Rinse

  • Empty and rinse out the water container.
  • Refill it with fresh water.
  • Press the Lungo button to empty the container of its content.
  • Empty and rinse out the drip tray.

Exit the Descaling Mode

  • Pixie, Essenza, Citiz and Inissia – press the two buttons simultaneously for three seconds. The lights will flash for 25 seconds during the preheating mode.
  • U – press and hold three buttons simultaneously for three seconds.
  • Latissima – take out the descaling nozzle.

Your machine is now ready!

Note: Be sure to use caution on countertops as this acid formula can have a similar effect as that of lemon juice.

Maintenance tips for producing the perfect Espresso

The quality of your Pressogno coffee depends on the machine used and how it is maintained. Here are some tips:

  • After each use of your machine, it is recommended to run water (without a capsule in the machine) for around 6 seconds in order to avoid the deposit of the coffee ground within the flow system. For automatic machines, just press the "espresso button".
  • To maintain the optimum temperature and quality of your espresso, descale your machine regularly. There is special cleaning equipment that has been especially designed for the Nespresso® machines and its components. It is not recommended to use vinegar, as it may damage your machine.
  • As the quality of water is essential for a good espresso, we also advise that you refill the water tank on a daily basis.
  • Please consult the manual that came with your machine for specific maintenance and troubleshooting tips.

The details

Water in the capsule container instead of Coffee in the Cup: The new Nespresso Machine models create incompatibility with Capsule Clones. In the test performed by K-Tipp, a large European Consumer Magazine, especially capsules from Coop, Jacobs and Aldi did not work, whereas Pressogno, Café Royal and La Caffè Mocha achieved 100% compatibility.

Nespresso has changed the way capsules are pierced, causing some compatible capsules to no longer function properly. The needles in the latest Nespresso models are so thin, that they are not able to pierce the capsule of some competitors and in the extreme case, will crush the capsule.

The Nespresso machine models "Pixie", "U" and "Inissia" are using the new, thinner injectors. This is "part of our ongoing development" of the capsule system says Nestle.

The problem for customers: While the new, thinner needles work well with the original Nespresso Aluminum capsule, they struggle with some plastic capsules from other manufacturers, as the needles are too thin and can’t pierce through the hard plastic.

The result: crushed capsules, half-full cups and plenty of water in the body, or the machine simply refused their service and turned off.

Our advice: Anyone who has previously used coffee capsules from other manufacturers should keep their Nespresso machine as long as possible, as the new machines do not work with all capsule clones.

K-Tipp performed a test with 12 Nespresso coffee machines and 8 Coffee Capsule brands

These capsules worked:

Capsules from these brands fit into all machines and are 100% compatible with the machines tested:

  • the Pressogno capsules "Espresso Medium" (available at SPAR, Volg and from the following Stores),
  • the "Espresso" capsules Café Royal ( available at Migros) and
  • the capsules  "Espresso" La Caffè Mocha (Coop , Fust and InterDiscount ).

These capsules did not work

By far the most problems occurred with the following brands:

  • the capsules "Espresso Classico" Jacobs Momente and
  • the capsules "Espresso 1882" Caffè Vergnano .

None of these capsules worked in the Nespresso "U" of Koenig. The needle could not pierce the capsules from Jacobs and the machine shut down.

Water ran passed the Caffè Vergnano capsule straight into the cup.

Jacobs manufacturer Mondelez says: "We are working to regain compatibility as soon as possible. There was a similar statement from Coop, stating that the suppliers would adapt to the changes.

The capsule "Supremo" from 100 % Espresso (available at Aldi) also proved incompatible: The Aluminum foil came off the capsule in almost all the testing. Particularly annoying was that in some cases, the foil was caught in the machine and had to be scraped off with a knife. Aldi is aware of the problem and says that in the problem with the foil has been resolved.

How the test was performed:

K-Tipp bought 12 standard editions of current Nespresso machines from DeLonghi, Koenig, Krups and Turmix . 10 Capsules from 8 different manufacturers were tested in every single machine.

  • Did the mechanism work properly?
  • Did the needles pierce the capsule or crush it?
  • Did we get a cup of coffee or some watery broth?
  • Not every deformation of some plastic capsule necessarily led to a loss in quality. However if there was more water in the cup than expected, this was considered a malfunction
