Great Taste. Less Waste.

In 2021, EcoCaffe donations to the Seabin Project for Cleaner Ocean has removed 164.4 kg of plastic so far!

Over 160 million tons of plastic is produced each year to create single-use disposable items and packaging.

With no established system to close the loop, this has led to over 70 years of accumulation of plastics in landfill (40%) and the environment (32%), with only 10% being recycled.

Plastics end up in waterways and oceans, breaking down into ever smaller pieces called micro-plastics, well known for entering the food chain through the water, air and food that we consume.

Seabin Smart Tech, similar to a rubbish bin X pool skimmer, removes floating plastics as small as 2mm, filtering 600,000L of water per day from oil and surface pollutants.

How does the Seabin work?

The Seabin moves up and down with the range of tide collecting all floating rubbish. Water is sucked in from the surface and passes through a catch bag inside the Seabin, with a submersible water pump capable of displacing 25.000 Lph (liters per hour), plugged directly into either a 110V or 220V outlet. The water is then pumped back into the marina leaving litter and debris trapped in the catch bag.

The Seabin can catch an estimated 3.9 Kgs of floating debris per day or 1.4 tons per year (depending on weather and debris volumes) including microplastics down to 2 mm small.

The Seabin unit is a “trash skimmer” designed to be installed in the water of Marinas, Yacht Clubs, Ports and any water body with a calm environment and suitable services available.

The unit acts as a floating garbage bin skimming the surface of the water by pumping water into the device. The Seabin V5 can intercept: floating debris, macro and microplastics and even micro fibres with an additional filter. By acting as a trash skimmer, the Seabin V5 is also able to clean the water from contaminated organic material (leaves, seaweed, etc…).

The Seabin V5 is easily equipped with oil absorbent pads able to absorb petroleum-based surface oils and detergent predominant in most marinas around the world.

SEABIN V5

With the addition of custom oil pad technology, the Seabin is ideal for skimming surface oils and pollutants.
Seabin

What are the statistics?

  • Captured an estimated 1.4 tons of debris per year
  • Catch bag can hold up to 20 kg
  • Running cost around $3 a day
  • Made from recyclable material

Here are some details about the Seabin "Daily Catch":

  • 11,647 plastic utensils is what the Seabin can catch per year.
  • Cigarette butts are the most common caught item in the Seabins
  • Micros plastics 2 mm in size are caught in the Seabin
  • Micro fibres are now being successfully trialled using 2 stage 1:5 filters

It appears Australia is FINALLY following in the footsteps of other countries when it comes to the ban of one-time use plastic bag.

Plastic Bag Ban Laws Australia wide

South Australia, Northern Territory, ACT and Tasmania have already placed bans on the plastic bag. Western Australia, Queensland and Victoria will follow their lead, implementing their own laws in July. However, New South Wales appears to be lagging behind...

Supermarket chains such as Aldi have never allowed plastic bags but it appears the big two are going to follow. Woolworths on June 20th and Coles on July 1st.

Turtle Plastic Bag Ban

It is a monumental moment for Australia as we finally make a move in reducing our overconsumption of plastic. From July onwards Australians will be forced to bring their own reusable bags to the shops with them and we are not upset about it.

For the majority of the population shopping means going in empty handed coming out with a mound of unnecessary waste (especially plastic)!

Before going on your next food haul keep these handy hacks in mind to reduce your environmental footprint and be an eco-shopper!

1. BRING YOUR OWN BAGS

reusable shopping bags

It seems so obvious, we know, but so many Australians still forget to bring their own shopping bags! Instead, what do they use? Plastic!!!

Our hack! Purchase bags that you can fold up really tight to carry in your everyday bag or leave a stash in your car so you never have an excuse!

2. DON'T PURCHASE PACKAGED FOODS

reusable shopping bags

For some reason supermarkets deem in necessary to package absolutely everything!!! When it comes to fresh produce, opt for small carry bags of your own rather than the plastic tear-off ones they provide and totally avoid anything coated in plastic.

Where possible, buy from organic farmers markets rather than the large chains if you can't find what you want without drowning in waste overload!!!

3. What can I eat?

Glass jars

Typically reducing waste goes hand in hand with healthy living, purely because processed food is typically packaged. However, more and more options are popping up, where you can scoop your own products into your own bags (LOOK OUT FOR THESE).

Where you can, try to find food packed in a material you think you can personally reuse. Preferably search for in glass jars, these are also perfect for future use!

processed packaged food

FUN FACT

Going one step future, you will find most of the processed food or over packaged food have ingredients that aren't good for the environment or for yourself.

Plastic leaking onto products can also put unwanted chemicals into your body and increase Oestrogen so not only will you be helping the environment but also yourself!

We hope you enjoyed these helpful hacks. If you did please be sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook for daily eco hacks and be sure to check out the EcoCaffe range.
